Four sacred abodes are referred to as chatur dhams or char dhams. It is said that traveling to each of the four abodes facilitates one's journey toward moksha, or salvation. Every dwelling signifies the quartet of yugas. Puri signifies Kaliyuga, Dwarka represents Dwaparyuga, Rameshwaram represents Tretayuga, and Badrinath represents Satyuga. The Puri Jagannath Temple must be the starting point, and one must circumambulate, or pradakshina, around it in a clockwise manner. To aid in the resurgence of Hinduism, Adi Shankara deliberately selected these four locations at all four corners of the nation. Geographically speaking, the four temples are arranged in a perfect square since Dwarka and Puri are on the same latitude while Badrinath and Rameshwaram are on the exact longitude.
